GREENBRIER COUNTY W.Va. (WVDN) – Earth Day, falling on April 22 this year is a day dedicated to environmental awareness and action. It’s a chance to celebrate our amazing planet, but more importantly, a springboard for positive change.
Earth Day’s roots trace back to 1970. Since then, it’s transformed into a global movement, mobilizing over a billion people in more than 193 countries. The official organization behind Earth Day is Earthday.org, which coordinates a wide range of events throughout the year.
Each year, Earth Day focuses on a specific theme. This year, the spotlight is on plastic pollution, a pressing environmental challenge. The theme, “Planet vs. Plastics,” underscores the urgent need to reduce plastic use and find sustainable alternatives.
Plastic pollution is a major threat to our ecosystems and wildlife. It can take hundreds of years for plastic to decompose, and it often ends up in our oceans, harming marine life. Microplastics, tiny fragments of plastic, have even been found in bottled water, according to the National Institutes of Health.
Earth Day is a great opportunity to take action, no matter how big or small. Here are some ideas:
• Reduce your plastic use: Carry a reusable water bottle, shop with reusable bags, and avoid single-use plastics like straws and cutlery.
• Educate yourself and others: Learn more about plastic pollution and share what you know with friends and family.
• Participate in local events: Many communities organize Earth Day events like cleanups, educational workshops, and tree plantings.
There are multiple events happening in Greenbrier and Monroe counties on April 20 to celebrate Earth Day. Check out this week’s edition of Recycle Lady to see details for three different events.
Earth Day is a reminder that we all have a role to play in protecting our planet. By working together, we can create a more sustainable future for generations to come.
