FAIRLEA- The Greenbrier East Spartans opened up their 2024 season on a gorgeous day at Spartan Yards on Saturday, March 16 against the Spring Valley Timberwolves.
Pitching from both teams was top notch, but at the end of the day, it was Spring Valley who escaped enemy territory with a 2-0 win over the Spartans.
Hits were at a premium for both teams, but the Timberwolves got a run in the third inning on a single from Cam Perdue and added another in the seventh when pitcher Grant Stratton helped his own cause with an RBI single as well.
Gavin Erskine got on base with a hit for the Spartans in the bottom of the final frame, but Garrett Wagoner shut the mini rally down by striking out all three other hitters for the Spartans.
Gavin Bennett threw a complete game for East and pitched extremely well. He scattered just 5 hits, and both runs he allowed were unearned. He struck out 4 batters also.
Stratton was equally as effective for Spring Valley. The senior gave up just three hits and struck out 11. All of Wagoner’s put outs in two innings were strikeouts.
Peyton DeHaven, Zion Detko, Erskine, and Bennett each had one hit apiece for East.
East hits the road this Tuesday, March 19 as they travel to play the Shady Spring Tigers.
