LEWISBURG W.Va. (WVDN) – Greenbrier East freshman violinist Lydia Jackson is making quite a name for herself as a musician. On Feb. 20, she performed the National Anthem at the Greenbrier East Boys basketball game.
She was also chosen from a pool of many auditionees across the state to play her violin in West Virginia’s prestigious “All-State” Orchestra on March 2. Students from all over the State travel to Charleston every January to compete in the yearly auditions, and the winners rehearse and perform an honors concert with the orchestra.
Jackson is the first string player from the Greenbrier Valley in recent history to join the orchestra. She studies violin with nationally known violinist Russell Fallstad at HeartStrings Academy in Lewisburg.
The community can also see Lydia perform locally at the upcoming “One Night Only Showcase,” a concert featuring local young talents at Carnegie Hall in Lewisburg on March 7 at 7 p.m.

This year’s WV All-State Orchestra convened at the end of February for three days of rehearsal at The Clay Center for The Arts and Sciences in Charleston and performed their concert on March 1. Esteemed conductor, James Palmer, who has been recognized with many national awards for his conducting and teaching, traveled from Georgia to lead the concert from the conductor’s podium. Music on the program included classical masterworks, including an orchestra arrangement of Bizet’s popular opera “Carmen.”
