GREENBRIER COUNTY W.Va. (WVDN) – Have you ever needed to retire an American flag and wondered how and where to do so? Well, thanks to the determination of a group led by Jeanne Clemons and in partnership with American Legion Post #69, a local chapter of 4-H has been successful in helping to properly dispose of a beloved banner.
With grants received, the group now has five receptacles in which flags can be respectfully retired. One of the locations is in White Sulphur Springs in front of the fire department. Four more are located at the Clifton Presbyterian Church in Maxwelton, The American Legion in Lewisburg, The WVU Extension Office in Fairlea/Ronceverte, the Post Office in Alderson and on the West end at The Marvel Center in Rupert. The receptacles are open 24/7. They are locked and secure, which keeps the flags dry and respected. The “Life is Good 4-H Club” will maintain the boxes.
Since the installment of the first box in Fairlea in October of 2022, over 400 flags have been collected and retired with the utmost consideration and regard.
Clemons, a new Army mom, has an affinity for her sons’ service and what the American flag stands for, so this project is near and dear to her heart.
