RICHWOOD – The Lady Cavaliers ran their record to 8-4 on the season with a 51-28 over the Richwood Ladyjacks on Friday night. Senior guard Hannah Sweet guided her squad through a rougher-than-expected first half that included a myriad of turnovers to get the Cavaliers back in the win column.
Greenbrier West got off to a sluggish start but managed to outscore their hosts 13-3 in the first quarter, Brilee Redden pumped in five points with four more from scoring leader Preslee Treadway. Sweet and Abigail Thomas each contributed a basket. Richwood, on the other hand, hit only three free throws to scratch out their offense.
As the second quarter got underway, the Cavaliers suffered through one of their worst quarters of the season. Despite multiple turnovers and sloppy play, West managed to hold on to a slim 20-14 lead at the break. Richwood outscored the Cavaliers 11-7. Fortunately for Greenbrier West, reserves Sam Holliday and Lacey Walker chipped in with buckets to help hold on to the lead for the cold-shooting, error prone visitors.
The Cavaliers came to life to start the second half, getting a much more balanced contribution from the roster. Redden knocked down a three and had five points in the quarter. Holliday also chipped in with a five-point effort. Sweet added four points and Maddie Fields found the scoring column with four as well. The Ladyjacks found tough sledding once again and could manage only six points with a three coming from senior Carlee Dillard. The Cavaliers led 40-20 after three quarters.
Walker led the Lady Cavaliers with a five-point fourth quarter as West lost a bit of their scoring touch in the final frame. Sweet, Treadway, and Fields each chipped in with 2 points. Richwood junior Sophie Smalley countered with four points for the Ladyjacks.
Greenbrier West’s next scheduled contest is Friday, January 19 at home against Shady Spring. The Ladyjacks travel to Meadow Bridge on Tuesday, January 16.
