BECKLEY, WV (WVDN) – After trailing not just most of three quarters, but by a large margin, the Greenbrier West Cavaliers boys’ basketball team came all the way back to defeat the Independence Patriots 71-63 on Thursday, January 4, 2024, at the New River CTC Invitational at the Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center.
Trailing by 10, 57-47, near the near the end of the third quarter, the momentum may have swung to the West bench when Braydon McClung hit a buzzer-beating jumper to cut Independence’s lead to 57-49 after three.
From that point forward, West (3-3), led by McClung, dominated the rest of the way and basically made the game a complete opposite of what it was prior to it. The Cavs outscored the Pats 22-6 in the fourth and took their first lead of the game on McClung’s old-fashioned 3-point play with 4:14 remaining. West never looked back, and Independence could not seem to look forward.
McClung finished the game with 31 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 assists. He got some scoring help from Tanner Hagy who knocked in 17 points as well.
Silas Nelson led Indy with 16 points.
