CHARMCO – The Class A #3 Greenbrier West Lady Cavaliers gutted out an impressive 58-55 win over Class 4A Oak Hill to improve to 4-1 on the season. After a back and forth first quarter that saw Greenbrier West hold a slim 11-9 lead, Preslee Treadway helped spark West to a 10-point halftime advantage. Treadway had 18 points at the break, giving the Lady Cavaliers some breathing room heading into the second half. Senior Hannah Sweet played a masterful first quarter and drilled a key three-pointer to help build West’s cushion. Haylee Ward and Sam Holliday came off the bench for the Cavaliers to add seven points to the cause for Greenbrier West.
Not to be outdone, Oak Hill’s junior point guard Taysia Gray had 16 of the Red Devils’ 22 halftime points. Cara Smith added 6 first half points but got into foul trouble with three going into the break.
The Lady Cavaliers maintained their 10-point advantage after three quarters. Sweet knocked down another key three and Maddie Fields added 4 points. West briefly built a 14-point bulge late in the quarter by holding both Gray and Smith scoreless through the majority of the period. Gray, however, knocked down two late buckets and that seemed to heat things up for Oak Hill heading into the final stanza.
Greenbrier West was able to maintain their lead behind the output of Treadway who poured in a team-high 30 points as well as pulling down 13 rebounds. It was Treadway’s third 30 plus-point night in five games this season. Gray put the Red Devils on her back in the fourth quarter, pouring in 13 of her game-high 33 points. Junior Jordan Davis scored all five of her points in the Red Devil’s rally attempt, but some timely rebounding from Fields and Abigail Thomas helped weather the storm for the Cavaliers. Down by six points, gray knocked down a three just before time expired to pull Oak Hill to with three.
In addition to Treadway’s 30, Fields chipped in with 10 points and 8 rebounds, Sweet added seven points, Ward had five, Brilee Redden four, and Holliday two.
Oak Hill got nine points from Cara Smith, five points each from Jada Wilburn and Jordan Harris, and three from Kasey Compton.
Greenbrier West heads to Shady Spring on Monday night. It will be the first meeting of the two schools in girls’ basketball since February 10, 2020. Oak Hill travels to Hurricane on Tuesday December 19.
