FAIRLEA, WV- The Greenbrier East Lady Spartans made quick work of Oak Hill on opening night on Tuesday, and on Friday, Dec. 1, they did the same with the Moorefield Yellow Jackets. East used a hot start and a big second half to cruise to a 72-35 victory at Spartan Gym in Fairlea.
Mackenna McClure and Ava Workman helped the Spartans (2-0) jump out to a quick 15-4 lead, but they got a little sloppy in the middle of the quarter. But Regan Rink provided a nice little spark off the bench at the end of the first quarter, the Spartans led 16-8.
Much like the aforementioned Oak Hill game, East separated themselves in the second quarter. They outscored Moorefield 24-6 and pulled away. Jada Waller, McClure, and Workman scored early to get the run started. An impressive and shocking part of the quarter was that Kennedy Stewart did not score her first field goal until midway through. Hannah Fuller played tough on the boards and played physical underneath all night. A McClure 3, A Kala Waller 3, and an Alizabeth Wooding bucket wrapped up the scoring and East led 40-14 at halftime.
East steadily increased their lead in the second half and dug into their bench. Sandy Banton and Haylee Heaster provided good minutes just as they did in game number one as the Spartans cruised to their second win of the early season.
Stewart led East with 15 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals. McClure racked up 14 points and five rebounds, Ka. Waller and Workman each scored 11.
Jaden Cullers led Moorefield (0-1) with 14 points.
The Spartans will face Bridgeport today at 4:00 PM.
