CHARMCO- It was a cool night in Charmco on Friday, Nov. 10 with temperatures dropping down into the high 30’s.
However, the 4th-seeded Greenbrier West Cavalier football team countered the weather and stayed on fire en route to a 49-0 blowout victory over the 13-seed, Wirt County Tigers in the first round of the Class A state playoffs.
Greenbrier West got their damage done in more ways than one.
Ethan Holliday scored three total touchdowns in three different ways with a 14-yard run, a 15-yard catch, and a 36-yard interception return. Jake Pate had two rushing scores and Tucker Lilly caught a 24-yard pass and picked up a backwards pass from Wirt Co. QB Tyler Smith and ran in untouched for a 5-yard return.
West had their full potential on display on all sides of the football. The defense, in addition to recording another shutout and forcing four turnovers, they also held down standout Tiger running back Chase Lowe. Lowe needed just 54 yards in the game to be Wirt County’s all-time leading rusher and the Cavs defense held him three yards shy of that feat with 51.
The Cavs will play 5th-seeded Wahama next weekend in Charmco. The exact date and time of that one will be updated per its release.
Please look for a bigger, more detailed recap of this game and a Wahama preview from Michael Goddard soon.
