FAIRLEA, WV- Goals from Andrew Holt and Noah Edwards in the first half pushed the Greenbrier East men’s soccer team to a 2-0 halftime lead on Saturday, Aug. 26 against the South Charleston Black Eagles.
That would have been more than enough as well as the East defense played, but just for good measure, they added two more goals in the second half from John Withrow (32:34 left in second half) and Ian Gadd (13:16).
East went on to win the game 4-0 and improved their early season record to 3-0-1.
Coach Lucas Lemine was encouraged by his team’s performance but knows there are still a lot of things to clean up.
“It was an encouraging performance because we were missing a starting center-back and started a sophomore with no varsity experience in his place,” coach Lucas Lemine said.
“South Charleston was extremely athletic as well, so having kids see that even though they aren’t as fast as their opponent, we can defend by playing proper angles. We need to improve in the attacking third. We created so many clear chances to score and didn’t. That will come back to haunt us later,” Lemine concluded.
The Lady Spartans defeated Buckhannon-Upshur 2-1 following the men’s game and picked up their first win of the young season (1-3)
