LEWISBURG (WVDN) – The musician known as Nelly, is set to take the stage at the State Fair of West Virginia. He will perform the second concert of the 98th annual fair.

From his humble beginnings in St. Louis, Missouri, to his meteoric rise to international stardom, Cornell Iral Haynes Jr., better known as Nelly, has left an indelible mark on the music industry.

Nelly, born on November 2, 1974, burst onto the music scene in 2000 with his debut album, “Country Grammar.” The album was a commercial success, selling over 8.4 million copies in the United States and earning a diamond certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The title track, “Country Grammar (Hot Shit),” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, cementing Nelly’s place in hip-hop history.

His sophomore album, “Nellyville,” released in 2002, further solidified his status as a hip-hop icon. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and featured the hits “Hot in Herre” and “Dilemma,” the latter featuring Kelly Rowland. Both tracks topped the Billboard Hot 100, with “Hot in Herre” earning Nelly his first Grammy Award for Best Male Rap Solo Performance in 2003.

Nelly’s unique blend of Midwestern twang and Southern bounce has helped him carve out a unique niche in the music industry. His catchy hooks and relatable lyrics have resonated with fans across the globe, making him one of the best-selling rap artists of the 2000s.

Beyond music, Nelly has made significant contributions to his community. In 2003, he founded the Jes Us 4 Jackie campaign, a bone marrow drive named after his sister who died from leukemia. Additionally, he established the 4Sho4Kids Foundation, which supports children born with developmental disabilities and drug-addicted parents.

In recent years, Nelly has continued to make music while also exploring other avenues. He has appeared on television shows like “Real Husbands of Hollywood” and competed in “Dancing with the Stars,” demonstrating his versatility as an entertainer. As Nelly’s career continues to evolve, his impact on the music industry remains undeniable. With a legacy rooted in innovation, resilience, and community service, Nelly’s influence extends far beyond his discography. His journey serves as a testament to the transformative power of music and the enduring appeal of authenticity.
