BELLE, WV- After a high-scoring 14-6 victory over Oak Hill on Tuesday, April 18, the Greenbrier East Spartans came up short in a pitcher’s duel, 3-1, on Wednesday against the Riverside Warriors.
East had an opportunity to get back to .500, but with the loss they fell to 10-12 on the year.
The Warriors scored two of their runs in the second inning when Alex Baria smacked a 2-run double to put Riverside up 2-0.
Peyton DeHaven’s RBI double in the very next frame cut the score to 2-1, but the rest of the game, offense was hard to come by for both teams.
Down 3-1 in the seventh, the Spartans had their chances to make a comeback. Clayton Morgan led off the inning with a base hit, but when Gavin Bennett got a base hit to keep the rally going, Morgan was thrown out attempting to get to third base. Then, DeHaven and Cline struck out with runners on first and second to end the game.
Both teams had just five hits on the night.
Darris Boswell started the game on the mound for East and Gabe Patton finished the last three innings. Both pitchers combined for five strikeouts.
East will return to action this Friday night against the no. 8 ranked Jefferson Cougars. The game will be played at Spartan Yards in Fairlea.
