BECKLEY, W.Va. (WVDN) – It is never a bad day when you beat the Woodrow Wilson Flying Eagles.
The Greenbrier East Spartans stole the lead late and defeated Woodrow Wilson 16-5 on Tuesday, March 21. The game was tied at 5-all with Greenbrier East batting in the top of the sixth inning, when Gabe Patton singled on the first pitch of his at-bat and knocked in two runs. That started a chain of positive events, as East scored 11 runs combined in the sixth and seventh frames to secure their second straight 16-5 win after defeating Princeton by the same score on Monday night.
East dug themselves a hole early after taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Woodrow Wilson scored four runs ignited on a double by Connor Mollohan.
Woodrow Wilson knotted the game up at 5-all in the bottom of the fifth inning, when Blake Stratton singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run.
The Spartans (2-1) tallied seven runs in the seventh inning. East’s offense in the frame was led by Patton, Henry Goodwin, Zion Detko, Peyton DeHaven, Ashton Cochran and Darris Boswell. They all drove in runs in the inning.
Boswell was the winning pitcher for Greenbrier East. He threw four innings, allowed six hits and four runs while striking out one. Patton threw three innings in relief out of the bullpen.
Tolliver took the loss for Woodrow Wilson. Tolliver lasted one-third of an inning, allowed three hits and three runs while striking out one.
Patterson started the game for the Eagles. He surrendered five runs on four hits over four and two-thirds innings and struck out three.
The Spartans collected 15 hits.
Boswell went 3-5 to lead the Spartan offense. DeHaven, Cochran, Clayton Morgan, Patton, Henry Goodwin and Detko all had two hits apiece. DeHaven drove in four runs, and Patton knocked in three.
Woodrow Wilson racked up 10 hits in the game. Stratton went 4-for-4 at the plate to lead them.
