Harry “Lindy” Mann, 86, of Ronceverte, WV, passed away Wednesday, April 5, 2017, at Peyton Hospice House in Fairlea, WV.
Lindy was born September 16, 1930, in Ronceverte to Arthur Howard and Mary Elizabeth Winton Mann.
He attended Greenbrier High School in Ronceverte and graduated from West Virginia University with a B.S. in forestry management. His first job after college in 1952, was with the Eastern Mapping Center of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in Arlington, VA. There he learned to compile topographic maps. After only a few months he was drafted and served two years with a combat construction engineering battalion during the Korean War. He resumed his employment with the USGS after his military service. His entire career was that of a cartographer. His employment spanned some 33 plus years with USGS, a private mapping company in York, PA, and the Aeronautical Chart and Information Center, a mapping arm of the Air Force. He served as a liaison for USGS to the military mapping agencies and the civilian mapping agencies. At USGS, he was chief of the Antarctica mapping programs and chief of programs and production for all four USGS mapping centers, Eastern in Virginia Midcontinent in Missouri, Denver in Colorado and
Western in California. He also served as the acting chief of the mapping division at times.
He was married to Shirley Lee Clarke; two children were born of that union, Cynthia Lee and Sharon Lynn. The children were born in York, but lived their early life in McLean, VA. The family lived in McLean, Fairfax County. Shirley died of Alzheimer’s disease in 2007.
Lindy was an elder in the Little Falls Presbyterian Church in Arlington, delivered Meals-on-Wheels, and enjoyed gardening and shared his berries and vegetables with neighbors and friends. He enjoyed playing most sports. He served as president and in other positions for the McLean Swimming and Tennis Club.
He married Betty Ozmina Masters in 2009. Their residence was Horseshoe Bend Road in Ronceverte. They enjoyed travel in Germany, Austria, many states in the U.S., and lots of Virginia and West Virginia parks, cities, and historic places. Lindy was a member and elder of the McLean Presbyterian Church in Ronceverte.
He owned property and a house along the Greenbrier River in Fort Spring, WV, for several years. There he loved having breakfast, lunch, and dinner overlooking the river. He enjoyed the required upkeep of the grounds, as well as the house. Chainsaw work was a favorite pastime along with hosting cookouts for family and friends.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings, Arthur H. Mann Jr., Edith J. Tolley, Ralph Mann, and Jean E. Morris.
Surviving are his wife, Betty Ozmina Masters Mann of Ronceverte; his children, Cindy Bowman and husband, Mike, and Sherry Roueche and husband, Steve Pike; his grandchildren, Jeremy Roueche and twins Daniel and Jocelyn Bowman; and Betty’s children, Sue Christian, David and Bill Weakley; and seven grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 PM on Friday, April 14, 2017, at the McLean Presbyterian Church with Pastor Ben Gurley officiating.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church.
