CHARCMO (WVDN) – Greenbrier West honored two senior members of the girls’ basketball team Friday night with a pregame ceremony followed by a 66-37 win over Pocahontas County. Meagan Poticher and Ava Barclay were the distinguished Cavaliers.
The win was the Cavaliers’ third over the Warriors this season. West defeated Pocahontas County 53-28 in the first round of the Braxton County Invitational on Dec. 28, 2022, and then beat the Warriors 56-33 in Dunmore on Jan. 4.
The duo of Cavalier seniors led the way for Greenbrier West in the win. Poticher notched her first double-double of the season with a 13-point, 11-rebound performance. It was the first time Poticher scored in double figures all season, setting a single-game, career-high in the process. The 11 rebounds matched her career-high which was set in West’s championship game victory over Braxton County earlier this season. Barclay poured in 13 points as well to go along with four rebounds and three steals.
Poticher led the way in the first quarter with 8 points. West also got 4 points from Abigail Thomas, while Preslee Treadway opened the scoring for the Cavaliers with a basket and a free throw. The Cavaliers were up comfortably 15-3 at the end of the first quarter.
The Cavaliers extended their advantage to 19 points on baskets from Thomas, Haylee Ward and Barclay. A pair of free throws by Pocahontas’ Olivia Vandevender interrupted West’s scoring spree momentarily, but Maddy Fields drilled a 3 for the Cavaliers. Treadway sank three foul shots as the game crept toward halftime. The Warriors ended the first half with a 4-point run, but West led 29-9 at the break.
Poticher and Treadway kept Greenbrier West rolling heading into the third quarter. Poticher opened the scoring with a made free throw followed by a Treadway basket. Poticher and Treadway each took turns with a field goal, increasing the Cavalier lead to 36-10. Brilee Redden followed a Warrior basket with a 3-pointer, before Barclay tallied 6 straight points. Treadway capped the Greenbrier West scoring with a couple of free throws for a 47-18 lead heading into the final period.
Maddy Fields ignited the Cavaliers in the fourth quarter with 8 points. Barclay added 5, and Haylee Ward chipped in with 4. The Cavaliers and Warriors finished up with 19 points each in the fourth quarter.
In addition to Poticher and Barclay, Treadway compiled her fifth double-double of the season with a 12-point, 13-rebound effort. Maddy Fields had 10 points and six rebounds.
Calli Propst led Pocahontas County with 9 points, getting all her scores in the second half. Haylie Spencer added 6 for the Warriors.
Greenbrier West improves to 13-3 and faced No. 3 Webster County in Charmco on Tuesday. Pocahontas County drops to 5-11 before they hosted Class AA No. 3 Summers County Monday night.
Raelyn Palmer was the Cavaliers’ third senior member. Palmer was injured during preseason practice while preparing for the state cheerleading tournament. The injury cost her the entire season.
