CHARMCO (WVDN) – Wyoming East shot a scintillating 8-14 from 3-point range in the first half Tuesday night, Jan. 24, to run away from Greenbrier West in a 63-43 win. Wyoming’s Garrett Mitchell led all scorers with 20 points. Mitchell was 4-7 shooting 3s in the first half.
Mitchell opened the scoring with a 3 from the right wing, and the Warriors never looked back. Wyoming East got out to a 15-0 lead before a Michael Kanode free throw got the Cavaliers on the scoreboard. The Warriors were poised and efficient offensively, and they were also more than happy to launch 3s. Mitchell had two himself, and Cole Lambert and Bryson Huff also got in on the action. The Warriors were 8-14 from the field including 4-8 from 3 in the opening quarter.
The Cavaliers, meanwhile, were desperately searching for some scoring output. Dale Boone knocked down two 3s, including one just before the buzzer, to keep West within shouting distance of their visitors. Boone had 8 first quarter points, but Greenbrier West trailed by 10, 22-12.
The Warriors kept their foot on the gas pedal in the second quarter. Mitchell knocked down two more 3s, had 8 points in the quarter and 16 in the first half. Lambert drilled his second trey, and Dacoda Cooper came off the bench to nail his only shot of the game for 3. The Warriors were 4-6 from 3 in the second period and 8-14 in the first half.
Boone had 3 points in the second period. McClung chipped in with 3 points, as West got 2 points each from Kadin Parker, Asher Barclay and Kanode. The Cavaliers were outscored 18-12 in the second quarter and trailed 40-24 at the half.
The Warriors came out cold from 3 in the second half, but the Cavaliers weren’t much warmer. Wyoming East shot a chilly 0-6 from behind the arc, but West could only muster a single 3 from Hagy. In fact, the Cavaliers only squeezed out four free throws to go with 2-7 shooting from the floor. Jacob Howard scored 4 in the frame for the Warriors. Greenbrier West trailed 50-33 at the end of the third quarter.
Neither team’s fortunes improved all that much in the fourth quarter. Lambert led Wyoming East with 4 points on a basket and two free throws. Bench player Zach Hunt hit the only 3 of the final period for the Warriors. Boone had West’s lone trey. Kanode, Barclay and Matthew Thomas each had a basket, while Chris Davis chipped in with a foul shot.
With the loss, Greenbrier West fell to 4-8 and headed to longtime rival Summers County Friday night, Jan. 27. The Class AA, 7th-ranked Warriors improve to 10-3 with a trip to Mingo Central scheduled for Friday night.
