All obituaries published in The West Virginia Daily News or the Greenbrier Valley Ranger must be submitted by a funeral home or crematory to ensure proof of death and family consent. Obituaries submitted by an individual cannot be accepted.
Death notices run free of charge. A death notice can only include the name of the deceased, where they are from, date and location of death and name of funeral home that is in charge of arrangements. In order to receive a free death notice, a full paid obituary must also run.
The obituary contains all of the above mentioned information, plus a biography (birth place, education, work history, civic affiliations, hobbies, etc), family members (deceased and surviving) and time, date and location of the funeral and visitation. Other information that may be included is pallbearers, charitable contributions and recognition of doctors, caregivers, etc.
The charge for The West Virginia Daily News is $70 for 10 inches or less and $7 for each additional inch, including pictures, and the deadline is no later than 8:30 AM on the day of publication. Pictures are measured in total inches.
The charge for the Greenbrier Valley Ranger is $11 per column inch. The deadline for Sunday’s Ranger is 12 noon on Thursday and for Wednesday’s Ranger is by 12 noon on Monday.
Obituaries from funeral homes out of the immediate area and those billed to individuals must be paid in advance of publication.
