Jeanne Bruce Swope Weikle, 71, passed away Tuesday, December 22, 2015, following a long illness.
Born in Princeton, WV, in 1944, she was the daughter of the late Kenneth Dabney Swope, Emily Posten Swope, and Frances Alderson Swope.
Jeanne attended Princeton High School, Greenbrier College for Women, and Greenbrier Community College Center, but her love was always the care and well-being of children. At Old Stone Presbyterian Church, she was a Sunday School teacher, kept the church nursery, taught the Mom’s Morning Out program, sang in the church choir, and was a four-in-hand handbell ringer. Her favorite and most gratifying job was with the
Children’s Home Society, where she served as a childcare advocate.
She was a member of the Lewisburg United Methodist Church and previously a member of Old Stone Presbyterian Church and Alderson Presbyterian Church. Among her many interests and memberships were the Greenbrier Historical Society, Red Hat Society, Democratic Executive Committee, and the Wives of the Chiefs of Police of WV. She participated in prayer and women’s circle groups at Lewisburg United Methodist Church and Old Stone Presbyterian Church.
After her cancer diagnosis in 2012, she pulled her family close and set out to see and do as much as she could with her remaining time, thanks to all who cared for her and made her life rich these last few years.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Lewisburg Police Chief Richard Edgar Weikle Jr.
She is survived by her sister, Lee Swope Smith of Lexington, VA; her daughters, Susan Emily Hur and Deborah Jean Weikle; her son, James Kenneth; she was blessed with four grandchildren, Rachel Boiteau, Nicholas Boiteau, Rebecca Boiteau, and Ryan Hur. She was loved by her extended family, brother-in-law, Robert; son-in-law, Rob; daughter-in-law, Tina; and her nieces, nephews, and many cousins.
Jeanne will be remembered during services at 11 AM on Tuesday, December 29, 2015, at Lewisburg United Methodist Church in Lewisburg with Pastor Rick Brown officiating. Burial will follow at the Old Greenbrier Baptist Church in Alderson, WV, where she will join seven generations of her family, including her beloved husband, father, and stepmother.
The family will receive friends and relatives at the Lewisburg United Methodist Church from 10-11 AM prior to the service.
