Charlotte Campbell Walker Carney, 95, of Kankakee, IL, died Tuesday, February 10, 2015, at Manor Care Nursing Home in Kankakee.
She was born November 1, 1919, at Minnehaha Springs, WV, the daughter of Boyd Layton and Maude Lockridge Campbell.
She graduated from Greenbrier Junior College in Lewisburg, WV. She married Elmer C. Walker on March 6, 1946, in Lewisburg. He died March 30, 1976. She then married Thomas V. Carney on July 23, 1988, in Kankakee. He died April 29, 1995.
She worked at Ashford General Hospital in White Sulphur Springs, WV, during World War II. After going to Kankakee in 1946, she worked at Kankakee Roper, A.O. Smith, the Y.M.C.A. for eight years, and retired from Kankakee Regional Office of Education after 16 years of service.
She belonged to the Kankakee Emblem Club #414 and the Kankakee County Educational Office Personnel.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church since 1959, having taught Sunday School, served as a deacon, and the chairman of the Mary Circle. She was an avid Cubs’ fan.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Bedford Campbell, Newton Campbell, and Craig Campbell; one sister, Janet Fry; two sons, James Walker and William Walker; one grandson, Trent Walker; and one stepson, Thomas J. Carney.
Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Craig and Pamela Walker of Saint Anne, IL; one daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Lary LaGesse of Las Vegas, NV; three stepsons, Edward J. and Janice Carney of Bourbonnais, IL, Gerald A. and Anna Carney of Florida, and Robert J. Carney of Chebanse, IL; one stepdaughter, Carol and Don Zens of Chebanse; grandchildren, Tracy and Mike Born II of Bourbonnais, Troy and Jayme Walker of Peotone, IL, Tracia Walker-Ortman of Bourbonnais, Scott LaGesse of Las Vegas, and Jeff and Brandi LaGesse of Las Vegas; 11 great-grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren; and several step-great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are two sisters-in-law, Wilma Campbell and Alma Campbell of Lewisburg; and several nieces and nephews, Tom and Susan Campbell of Lewisburg, Bedford “Skip” Campbell of Selinsgrove, PA, Mary Campbell of Saint Augustine, FL, Shirley and John Morris of Richmond, VA, and Arthur and Carol Frey of Leesburg, VA.
Visitation will be from 5-7 PM on Friday, February 13, 2015, at Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home in Bourbonnais.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 PM on Tuesday, February 17, at McCraw Funeral Home in Lewisburg with the Rev. Susan Sharp Campbell officiating. Burial will follow in Rosewood Cemetery in Lewisburg.
Visitation will be two hours prior to the service at McCraw Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or Hospice of Kankakee Valley.
