Howard Lee Lively, 90, died Saturday, January 3, 2015, at Catawba Regional Hospice in Newton, NC.

Howard was born July 6, 1924, in Keeney Knob, WV, to the late Jettie R. Lively and Macy Mae Stover.

He was a Methodist most of his life and later became a member of St. Martin Lutheran Church in Maiden, NC.

Howard served in the United States Army during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and the Oak Leaf Cluster after being wounded in action in Heilbronn, Germany. He was a 1950 graduate of West Virginia University with a degree in chemical engineering. Using this degree, he worked as an industrial engineer, eventually retiring from Burlington Industries in 1987 as senior project manager. Howard enjoyed travel and history and, after retirement, enjoyed landscaping projects at their home in Greensboro, NC. He had a strong work ethic and was loyal and dedicated to all he did.

In addition to his father, Jettie R. Lively, and mother, Macy Mae Stover, he was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Jane B. Lively.

Survivors include his son, H.L. Lively II of Chapel Hill, NC; daughter, Linda Scott and husband, David Gaston, of Newton; grandchildren, Kevin Scott of Newton, Kelly Scott Mozgala and husband, Jeff, of Hickory, NC, and Joshua Lively Glasson of Durham, NC; and sister, Virginia Ferrell of Seymour, ID. He took great delight in his great-granddaughters, Sophia Jane Mozgala and Miabella Mozgala.

A funeral service will be held at 7 PM on Tuesday, January 6, 2015, in the chapel of Drum Funeral Home in Hickory, NC, with Pastor Nathan Yoder officiating.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 5-6:45 PM on Tuesday at the funeral home.

A visitation will also be held at the McCraw Funeral Home in Lewisburg, WV, at 2 PM on Wednesday, January 7.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Avenue, Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601-7633, or Catawba Regional Hospital, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, NC 28658.

Condolences may be made to the family at www.drumfh-hickory.com.

Drum Funeral Home & Cremations in Hickory and McCraw Funeral Home in Lewisburg are in charge of arrangements.
