Carlos Dean Hefner, 91, of White Sulphur Springs, WV, died Wednesday, December 10, 2014, at the Peyton Hospice House in Fairlea, WV.
Born March 26, 1923, in White Sulphur Springs, he was a son of the late Russell V. and Nora Ozella Hefner.
Carlos graduated from White Sulphur High School in 1942 and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Coast Guard aboard the USS Mayflower. He dedicated 20 years of his career serving his community as the Greenbrier County Deputy Sheriff and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in White Sulphur Springs.
Carlos was known throughout the region for his kindness and gentle spirit, calm demeanor and sweet sense of humor that brought light to every room he entered. He had a true gift for understanding and fixing anything mechanical, particularly the delicate work involved in watch repair, and he loved motorcycles and cars, amusing his family with frequent trade-ins for the next best option. He was a loving and generous man who will be greatly missed and always remembered.
In addition to his parents, Carlos was preceded in death by three brothers, Vernon, William and Charles Fredrick.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Glenna Nichols Hefner at home; son and daughter-in-law, Carl and Linda Hefner of Allegheny, VA; granddaughter and grandson-in-law April Hefner and the Rev. Gregory Rumburg of Nashville, TN; a special niece and family supporter, Carol Campbell of Covington, VA; and a host of other loving family and friends.
His funeral service will be at 2:30 PM on Sunday, December 14, 2014, in the chapel of Shanklin Funeral Home with the Rev. Greg Scott officiating.
Burial will follow in the Mapledale Cemetery on Rt. 92 in White Sulphur Springs.
Visitation will be on Saturday, December 13, 2014, from 6-8 PM at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests expressions of sympathy be made to the Peyton Hospice House at 1265 Maplewood Avenue in Lewisburg, WV.
Shanklin Funeral Home in White Sulphur Springs is serving the family.
