Norman Elwood Buckland, 89, of Big Draft Road, White Sulphur Springs, WV, passed away Monday, September 15, 2014, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Ronceverte, WV.
Born July 4, 1925, at Sherman Hollow, near White Sulphur Springs, he was a son of the late Norman Edward and Sidney Jane Josephine Cox Buckland.
Mr. Buckland was a member of the Eakle United Methodist Church in White Sulphur Springs. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran, serving in South Africa and India. Mr. Buckland worked for Burlington Mills for 25 years and then was an insurance agent for the Prudential Insurance Company until his retirement. He was a local historian for Greenbrier County and wrote two printed books. One book was about the people and area history of Route 92, and the other book was written on the eastern part of Greenbrier County and the White Sulphur Springs area. He was very much a “people person” and wrote a lot of other memoirs about himself, his family history, and friends. He was the last surviving member of his family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Alma Saunders Buckland in December 2004; and a grandson, Jed Dale Patton Buckland in 2005.
Survivors include two sons, Roy Buckland (Charlotte) and Ronnie Buckland (Pam), all of White Sulphur Springs; two daughters, Carol Broughman (Bobby) of Covington, VA, and Jean Campbell (Bruce) of Miami Lakes, FL; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 AM on Thursday, September 18, 2014, at the Eakle Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ed Vallandingham officiating.
Interment will follow in Greenbrier Memorial Gardens in Lewisburg, WV, with military Graveside rites.
Visitation will be from 6-8 PM on Wednesday, September 17, at Shanklin Funeral Home in White Sulphur Springs.
