Raymond V. Austin, 85, of Ronceverte, WV, passed away Monday morning, May 19, 2014, at Greenbrier Valley Medical Center in Ronceverte following an extended illness.
Raymond was born October 9, 1928, in Ronceverte and was the son of the late Christopher Columbus and Bertha E. Potter Austin.
Mr. Austin was a retired staff sergeant from the U.S. Air Force, having served during World War II and the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He was a former Ronceverte City Police officer.
He attended the Ronceverte Baptist Church and was a member of Moose Lodge #2353.
Preceding Raymond in death was an infant daughter, Victoria Rhea; sisters, Nella Markey, Edith Fischer, Eula May Young, Jean Rodoussakis, and Hazel Plaza; and brothers, Dana, Homer, William, Milburn, Dayton, Cecil, Tom, Zenith, and Grady.
Survivors include his wife, Lavonia V. Potter Austin; son, Raymond Steven Austin of Paso Robles, CA; grandchildren, Amber, Kelley, and Shawn; one great grandchild; sisters-in-law, Jean Austin of Elizabethton, TN, and Rosea Lea Austin of Forest, VA; brother-in-law, Ralph Plaza of Miami, FL; special friend he called “brother,” Rodney “Red” Ayers; and a host of nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and great-grandnieces, and greatgrandnephews.
Funeral services for Mr. Austin will be held Saturday, May 24, 2014, at 5 PM at the Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home in Ronceverte with Pastor Andy Howdock officiating. Interment will be held July 12 at the Riverview Cemetery in Ronceverte at 5 PM with military honors.
The family will receive their relatives and friends from 4 PM until service time at the funeral home.
