The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports that there have been 19 additional deaths related to complications stemming from COVID-19 within the last 24 hours. Today, Saturday, February 6, marks the fourth-consecutive day of double-digit COVID-related deaths within the state.
Among those now confirmed deceased are a 93-year-old Monongalia County man, a 64-year-old Mingo County man, a 79-year-old Upshur County woman, a 63-year-old Pleasants County woman, a 69-year-old Wood County man, a 67-year-old Wood County man, a 71-year-old Wood County woman, a 90-year-old Wood County woman, a 73-year-old Pleasants County man, an 86-year-old Mingo County man, a 69-year-old Wood County woman, a 61-year-old Marshall County woman, an 88-year-old Wood County woman, an 86-year-old Harrison County man, an 82-year-old Greenbrier County man, a 69-year-old Mercer County woman, a 79-year-old McDowell County man, a 76-year-old Mingo County man and a 79-year-old Mason County woman.
The total number of West Virginians who have succumbed to COVID-19 is now 2,119.
The DHHR further reports that 549 new cases of the virus have been identified, bringing the current active case-count to 16,886. The 12,782 laboratory COVID-19 tests performed access the state on Friday, February 5 have yielded a daily positivity-rate of 4.10%. And at 5.60%, the cumulative positivity-rate is beginning to slowly decrease.
Vaccination efforts continue across West Virginia, and the Mountain State has now fully vaccinated 101,352 residents. Currently health officials have administered every available first-dose allotted to the state and 83.5% of the second-dose allocation.
During his Friday, February5 coronavirus response media-briefing, Gov. Jim Justice stated that state leadership is “pushing as hard as we can” for the federal government to supply West Virginia with additional doses of the vaccine.
“We’re going through every channel we can go through,” Justice said. “One thing that I cannot get straight in my head is you have states all over this country that have hundreds or thousands or millions of vaccines that are not in somebody’s arm, they’re in a warehouse. Hours mean something – not days, weeks or months – hours mean something to try to save somebody’s life.”
In Pocahontas County, considerable movement has been seen with regard to COVID-numbers over the last two-days. With an infection rate of 19.92% and a percent positive of 4.47%, the county has been downgraded to the gold designation on the DHHR’s color-coded County Alert System Map. Greenbrier County remains designated as orange while Monroe County remains designated as yellow.
At present, 378 West Virginians remain hospitalized with COVID-19, including 115 being treated in area intensive care units and 56 currently receiving assistance through ventilators. The W.Va. DHHR reports that 105,185 residents who have previously been infected with the virus have now recovered.
