Editor’s Note: Lewisburg resident and councilmember Arron Seams released a copy of his letter to West Virginia’s United States congressional delegation to members of the media.
TO: Representative Carol Miller, Senator Shelly Moore Capito, and Senator Joe Manchin
My name is Arron Seams, member of the Council of the City of Lewisburg, WV, and like each of you, I hold representative office – having been elected by my constituents to serve their best interest above my self-interest.
Like each of you, I proudly and gravely swore an oath to uphold the Constitution of the United States. Today, I ask you to join me in calling for Donald J. Trump’s immediate removal from office either by Vice President Michael Pence’s invocation of the 25th Amendment or through his impeachment and conviction by the United States Congress.
The President has shown that he is willing to upend our democracy and attempt to overturn the will of the people to remain in power. Even when the systems of that democracy allowed his election almost four years ago despite a plurality of voters who, long before his actions on Wednesday, January 6, 2021, chose another person to lead because they did not find him qualified to faithfully execute the duties of the office, but instead feared him unable or unwilling to uphold an oath to the United States Constitution.
West Virginians – as you should know – are a proud, stubborn, hard-working, and kind group of Americans who have been lied to by despots and whose earnest and hard-won advantages have been taken – stolen – across generations. Because we have had so many opportunities to learn about this theft or to experience it firsthand, I ask you to join me. Join me in rebuking the participation of any West Virginian, including WV State Delegate Derrick Evans, in the terror and insurrection at the Capitol on Wednesday. Because they had every opportunity as well as the obligation to know better. Join me in condemning the efforts of your colleagues in Congress to pass the responsibility for the events onto Antifa, BLM, or any other person or group than the Insurrectionist in Chief and the traitorous movement he fuels and commands.
Make no mistake: had this sedition succeeded, Trump and his enabling allies would have taken full credit. Now, I will remind you that West Virginians; and Americans; and, in fact, any free person in the world should appreciate the danger of a person or group who would have all the credit when they succeed but take none of the responsibility when they fail, especially and tragically once blood has been shed.
Please make West Virginians proud by calling Donald J. Trump out for what he is: just another person in our State’s history who would abandon and betray West Virginia the second we have nothing left that he wants. I once more ask you to use your voice to call for his removal and, if necessary, your constitutional powers to enact it. Thank you for serving and thank you for your time and support.
Sincerely,
Arron Seams
