The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reported 1,276 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, January 5, as well as 46 deaths.
Among those confirmed deceased are an 88-year-old Monongalia County woman, a 69-year-old Hancock County man, a 71-year-old Kanawha County man, a 56-year-old Hampshire County woman, a 77-year-old Hampshire County woman, a 73-year-old Fayette County woman, a 76-year-old Mercer County man, a 78-year-old Harrison County man, a 77-year-old Greenbrier County woman, an 82-year-old Hancock County woman, an 83-year-old Greenbrier County woman, a 94-year-old Greenbrier County woman, an 81-year-old Berkeley County woman, a 62-year-old Berkeley County man, a 64-year-old Kanawha County woman, an 80-year-old Lincoln County man, a 63-year-old Monongalia County man, a 76-year-old Berkeley woman, a 96-year-old Monongalia County woman, a 71-year-old Hampshire County woman, an 88-year-old Monongalia County woman, a 78-year-old Monongalia County woman, an 86-year-old Berkeley County woman, a 60-year-old Mercer County woman, a 70-year-old Monongalia County man, a 70-year-old Mercer County man, an 87-year-old Greenbrier County woman, an 85-year-old Hancock County woman, a 71-year-old Fayette County man, an 81-year-old Wood County man, a 92-year-old Kanawha County man, a 79-year-old Monongalia County man, an 89-year-old Hancock County woman, a 97-year-old Marshall County woman, a 73-year-old Cabell County woman, an 86-year-old Cabell County woman, an 87-year-old Kanawha County man, a 77-year-old Cabell County woman, an 84-year-old Jackson County man and a 79-year-old Marion County woman.
A total of 1,442 West Virginians have now lost their lives due to complications of COVID-19.
There were 10,005 laboratory COVID-19 tests performed across the state on Monday, January 4, yielding a daily positivity-rate of 12.01% The cumulative positivity-rate is now 5.12%. Currently, there are 27,316 active cases of COVID-19 reported statewide.
West Virginia has administered 56,354 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine thus far. At present, 806 residents are hospitalized with the virus, including 214 receiving treatment in the ICU and 92 who are being assisted with ventilators. The W.Va. DHHR reports that 64,404 of those previously infected with COVID-19 have now recovered.
