Once again, Jim’s Drive In is collecting warm outerwear to be shared with those who need them.
For the 4th year, racks stand outside the restaurant for community members to hang clean, gently used coats, along with a box in which to place hats, gloves, scarfs and other warmth-inducing accessories for the taking.
The coats are “ready to wear, ready to go,” explained Lynn Massie, daughter of Jim’s owner, Kathy Massie.
Lynn said the idea to share coats came from social media posts about similar events held in larger cities.
Typically all sizes of outerwear are represented, but if a certain size isn’t available, a phone request to Jim’s may solve that issue. That goes for other types of clothing as well, Lynn Massie said.
With frequent stops at Goodwill by the Massie family, and donations from great community members and customers, the racks typically stay full and available around the clock, however children’s coats are in high demand. Lynn asks anyone who has any extra children’s outerwear to drop them by.
Being so close to Lewisburg Elementary School makes the coat rack at the restaurant a perfect stop for parents and grandparents to help with providing their families with something warm to wear, Lynn explained.
The coat drive will run through the first of February, after which time, anything left behind will be donated to another local charitable site.
A pet food and treat drive is also being conducted at Jim’s through December 23 to benefit the Greenbrier County Humane Society.
For more information, call 304-645-2590. The restaurant is located at 479 Washington Street.
Although coats can be picked up or dropped off anytime, day or night, Jim’s Drive In is open Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
