The West Virginia Department of Education has once again updated the color-coded county education map on the evening of Saturday, Nov. 28. While Fayette and Summers Counties remain designated the same as last week, (yellow and green respectively) Mercer County has been downgraded to green.
There has seen little fluctuation with COVID-19 infection rate in Fayette County. On Saturday, Nov. 21, the rate was 27.96%. Seven-days later, the rate is 31.33%. The county’s percent positive has also seen only minimal movement; going from 3.05% to 3.42% in the same one-week period.
On Wednesday, Nov. 25, Fayette County Schools announced that open enrollment for second-semester virtual school is now underway for both current and new virtual students. The deadline for enrollment is Friday, Jan. 1, 2021.
On Monday, Nov. 23, Summers County High School released a statement regarding upcoming Senior Formal pictures for 2021.
Summer County High School shared a post on social media via the Summers County High Yearbook Facebook page.
“We’ve had several inquiries about 2021 Senior Formal pictures and when they will be taken. We hope to have them scheduled soon, but they involve the sharing of tuxedo jackets and drapes, which we do not feel is in the best interest of our seniors or our yearbook staff at this time. Hopefully soon!”
The infection rate has remained relatively stable in Summers County, as well. On Saturday, Nov. 21, the rate was 21.02%. Seven-days later the county’s infection rate is an even 25.00%. The percent positive within Summers County has gone from 2.02% to 2.34% within that same seven-day period.
Things in Mercer County seem to be improving regarding COVID-19 spread. Not only was the county downgraded to green for the upcoming school week, but their infection rate and percent positive numbers have decreased significantly, as well. Since last Saturday, Nov. 21, Mercer County’s infection rate has dropped from 39.63% to 29.90%, while their percent positive has gone from 3.30% to 2.22%.
However, despite the improved numbers, on Thursday, Nov. 26, Mercer County Schools posted the following statement to social media: “A positive COVID-19 case has been confirmed at Melrose School. Contact tracing has been completed and those affected notified. Deep cleaning and disinfection of affected areas will be completed prior to employees/students returning after the Thanksgiving holiday.”
The West Virginia Department of Education has also confirmed active outbreaks of COVID-19 at the Glenwood School in Mercer County and Jumping Branch Elementary School in Summers County. The number of confirmed cases reported from the school locations are two and seven, respectively.
The West Virginia Department of Education will update the color-coded county education map on Saturday, Dec. 5 at 5 p.m.
