West Virginia State Police have confirmed additional details regarding an incident that occurred at the Dollar General on Nicholas Street in Rupert, which resulted in the death of one man. James Alvis III was the victim of an apparent beating before being transported to the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
At approximately 6:45 p.m., the Rainelle Detachment of the West Virginia State Police were notified of a fight in progress at the Dollar General store. Trooper B.J. Borsman was the first to respond, and later joined by Deputy A.L. Workman and CPL. S.W. Hudnall.
Witnesses reported observing Jonathan Cole McClung, 49, as well as a minor, assault Alvis in the parking lot by striking him with their fists. Shortly after the attack began, Alvis fell to the ground. Witnesses to the event are reported by the State Police to have restrained the suspects until Trooper Borsman arrived.
Shortly after arriving at the Greenbrier Valley Medical Center, Alvis was pronounced dead at 8:03 p.m. Both McClung and the minor were arrested and charged with murder in the first degree, as well as conspiracy to commit a felony. McClung is currently being held at Southern Regional Jail. No bail has been set at this time.
