Both Eastern Greenbrier Middle School Volleyball JV and Varsity teams finished the week with one loss and one win each.
On Wednesday the Knights traveled to Beckley to take on the Park Road Runners. The JV team lost in two sets (11-25, 9-25).
Leading the way was Trinity Perkins, Mackenna McClure and Campbell Bundy in assists. Maddie Podsiadlik and Emily McClure led the team in serving. Passing leaders included Mackenna McClure, Kate Lehman and Emily McClure. Emily McClure had an impressive night passing up balls from a strong serving Park team. Mackenna McClure, Maddie Podsiadlik, Kate Lehman and Lyla Smith each contributed a kill.
The Varsity Knights lost a tough fought match forcing extended play in the second set (17-25, 26-28). The match created much excitement as the two teams traded points back and forth during the second set.
Leading the way for the Varsity Knights were Natilee Wellman who owned the net leading the team in kills, followed closely by Haley Byars, Haley Workman, Jenna Groves, and Aundraya Simmons. Natilee Wellman and Haley Byars filled the stat sheet with an impressive 28 assists combined. Allyson Martin and Mollie Pack led in passing. Mackenna McClure was called into action in the second set to replace an injured player and stepped up nicely. Despite the loss, Coach McClure said it was the best she’d seen the Varsity play to date. She is hopeful the team can build on that experience throughout the remainder of the season.
On Thursday both teams traveled to Summers County in a rematch from week one. Both JV and Varsity were successful against the Bobcats.
JV won in two sets (25-10, 25-19). Campbell Bundy led the team in assists with 3, while Lyla Smith and Kamari Walton each had 2. Another big night at the net as Mackenna McClure had 3 kills while Maddie Podsiadlik, Sydney Norman, Aryn Cleghon, Lyla Smith and Ciara Sheppard each had 2.
The team was led in serving by Aryn Cleghon, Sydney Norman, Norah Ambler, Mackenna McClure and Lyla Smith each having three or more points off serves, while Campbell Bundy topped with 5. Another team effort in passing with Lyla Smith and Ciara Sheppard leading the team with 9 digs a piece followed closely by Campbell Bundy, Sydney Norman and Aryn Cleghon. The win was a total team effort.
The Varsity team also won in two sets (25-5, 25-12). Karma Jacobs had a well-rounded game leading the team in kills along with 3 assists and 5 digs. Jenna Groves, Natilee Wellman and Aundraya Simmons played the net well and added 5 kills each and Hailey Ervin had 3. Assists were a group effort with Jenna Groves leading the way with 6, and Hailey Ervin, Haley Byars and Natilee Wellman with 5. The team saw spot on serving with Allyson Martin, Mollie Pack and Hailey Ervin with a combined 19 points coming from aces. The combo of Ervin and Pack saw smooth and accurate jump serves. Hailey Ervin also led the team in passing. The Knights overall records are Varsity (3-3) and JV (3-2).
This week the Knights will play three matches in as many nights. Monday the Knights welcome Western Greenbrier Middle School. This is always a match that the Knights look forward to, as the teams break up and play three matches by grade instead of JV and Varsity. Tuesday the Knights will travel to Peterstown, and they will conclude the week Wednesday at home against the Mt. View Hawks.
