CHARMCO (WVDN) – Opening night jitters aren’t uncommon for an athlete. Neither are coming-out parties. On Friday night in Charmco, both were on display.
Richwood often looked overmatched by Greenbrier West’s constant, full-court, pressure defense. Affectionately known as “Greenbrier Press,” the Cavaliers forced the Lumberjacks into 36 turnovers, many of which resulted in transition points for West. The Cavaliers scored 39 points off Richwood miscues and added 31 transition points in a dominant opening-night win. Dale Boone and Braydon McClung led the charge with five steals each.
A majority of the points were produced by the senior forward Boone. Boone poured in a career-high 33 points, going 12-23 from the floor and knocking down three 3-pointers. Boone also sank 6 of 8 free throws. Boone’s previous high-water mark was 12 points in a win over Summers County last January. In Friday night’s victory, Boone set personal bests for points, free throws attempted and made free throws. Boone added six rebounds and five steals for good measure.
The Cavaliers overwhelmed the Lumberjacks in the first quarter, surging out to a 33-8 lead. By halftime, West had stretched that to a 58-15 advantage. The Cavaliers lead swelled to 46 points early in the third quarter before the Lumberjacks found some footing. Richwood’s Trae Trivolette scored 8 points to keep the Lumberjacks afloat in the third.
McClung added 14 points for the Cavaliers and Matthew Thomas chipped in with 13. Seven other Cavaliers got in on the scoring. Michael Kanode scored 7 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Kadin Parker scored 4 points and added seven assists. Tanner Hagy and Damian Dixon had 5 points each, and Asher Barclay contributed 6 points. Chris Davis had 4 points and Levi Ramsey added a basket.
Cooper Donahue was the leading scorer for Richwood with 17 points. Trivolette added 9, and Grant Russell scored 8.
Greenbrier West has defeated Richwood 14 straight times, dating back to December 2016. The Cavaliers are on the road at Wyoming East on Tuesday. Varsity action begins at 7 p.m. Richwood travels to Midland Trail on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
