CHARMCO (WVDN) – Greenbrier West claimed the inaugural Class A Coalfield Conference Volleyball Saturday in Charmco, defeating James Monroe 2-1 in finals.
The Cavaliers blew through the pool play portion of the tournament with a 5-0 record. The Mavericks earned their spot in the best-of-three championship match with a 4-1 record in pool play. Summers County was third with a 3-2 record while Meadow Bridge finished up at 2-3. Midland Trail ended with a 1-4 mark while Richwood was winless on the day.
The Coalfield Conference has experienced something of a rebirth in the past two years. Class A teams that had broken away in 2019 to form their own conference have rejoined the association, and a Class AAA division has re-emerged to complement the Class A and AA divisions. Part of the conference’s vision is to create members-only tournaments in sports such as volleyball, basketball, softball, and baseball. Wrestling and track have had conference tournaments on an annual basis for many years. By all accounts, the conference volleyball tournament was a success for all involved.
Greenbrier West dropped the first set of the championship match 20-25 but rebounded to take the next two sets 25-23 and 25-16. The Lady Cavaliers have put together a 27-7-2 overall record with an impressive 21-4 mark over their last 25 matches. Greenbrier West heads to Nicholas County on Thursday at 6 p.m.
