LEWISBURG (WVDN) – With nearly half the season gone, the Greenbrier East Spartans sit at just 1-3 on the season, but it is not getting them down as they are ready for the stretch run and to turn everything around.
In their three losses, East has struggled to stop the run, allowing a 200-yard rusher in each of those contests.
However, in the Spartans lone win over Robert C. Byrd, they were the ones running the ball effectively. Although in that contest, they did everything well.
Head coach Ray Lee knows the importance of a bye week and how it can re-focus a team to get their eye back on the prize.
“Having a week off gives our players and coaches a time to heal both mentally and physically. If gives us a chance to practice without a deadline of preparation,” Lee said.
Lee is not really worried about his team’s record or the rear view mirror and is instead focused on what lies ahead on the schedule.
“We just need to continue to work hard and play as a team. We play each week like it’s our last the Championship game,” Lee stated.
When asked if through four games, he thought his team would have only one win, Lee gave about as good of an answer as possible.
“As a coach you’re never where you think you should be but we’re playing some pretty good football. We’re getting to see a lot of young players perform and improve each week. Getting to see some players at other positions to develop some team chemistry to try and make a pretty good run the second half of our season,” Lee said.
The Spartans will head back to the field this Friday, Sept. 30, when they host the Hampshire Trojans.
