A Nicholas County Sheriff’s deputy was killed Friday night, June 3, and another injured in a shootout in the Birch River area of Nicholas County.
The two deputies were shot after responding to a domestic disturbance.
Deputy Tom Baker was shot in the back and succumbed to his injuries.
The other officer, Cpl. J. Ellison, was shot in the leg was treated at Summersville Regional Medical Center. He has been released.
The officers reportedly exchanged fire with two individuals. One suspect, Richie Holcomb, 36, was killed, and the other, Tyler Kelly, 28, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. He is currently lodged in Central Regional Jail in Flatwoods.
“Cathy and I ask all West Virginians to keep Nicholas County in your prayers right now,” tweeted Gov. Jim Justice on Saturday. “The scene is now secure. Our First Responders are heroes, they run to the fire to keep us safe and we should never forget their sacrifice.”
Sen. Stephen Baldwin released a statement as well.
“Names will begin to be made public in the coming days; please respect the privacy of families due to the tragic and sensitive nature of this incident,” Baldwin’s statement said.
“This is a terrible shock to the local community, and they need our love and support right now,” Baldwin said.
