The Greenbrier East Spartans beat the James Monroe Mavericks 7-2 on Tuesday, April 19, behind some timely hitting and a good pitching performance from Darris Boswell.
The Spartans got on the board in the first inning when Gavin Bennett drove in Boswell with an RBI single. That was the third of three straight base hits to lead off the frame.
The Spartans then scored three runs in the fifth inning to take a commanding 7-1 lead.
The big inning was driven on doubles by Peyton DeHaven and Jonathan Sauls, and a single by Clayton Morgan.
Boswell was credited with the victory for East. The righty went six innings, allowed just two hits and two runs while striking out nine.
Jacob Roshau threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen.
Luke Fraley took the loss for the Mavericks. He lasted 3.1 innings and gave up four hits and four runs.
The Spartans racked up 10 hits on the day.
Isiah Brooks (2-for-2) and Morgan (2-for-3) both had multiple hits for Greenbrier East. Chris Heaster also had a triple.
With the victory, East snapped a five-game losing streak and got back into the much-needed win column. Their record now sits at 8-11 with a contest looming Friday, April 22, at Oak Hill.
