CRAWLEY (WVDN) – Greenbrier West softball rebounded from three-straight losses to shutout the Pikeview Panthers 9-0 Monday night in Crawley. Michaela Alley struck out six and allowed only one hit in posting her second win over the Panthers this season. Preslee Treadway went 2-3 with 2 RBI and Desteney Walker added a 2-3 evening as well.
Pikeview looked to score early when Christina Hale reached base on a Cavalier throwing error. Alley then allowed her only base hit of the evening when junior Macie Duckworth laced a double to centerfield. With Duckworth and Hale in scoring position, Treadway settled under a foul ball to end the Panther threat.
Walker led off with a double and later scored when Treadway duplicated the effort to left field. Brown flied out to right field and Alley grounded out to end the first with a 1-0 cavalier lead.
Alley and the Cavaliers continued to master the Pikeview batters. Kyndall Taylor assisted Braelee Brown for the first out then fielded a line drive for out number two. Alley then collected her first strikeout of the evening.
Patterson led off the bottom of the second inning with a sharp grounder and an error by Kaylee Honaker at first base. Maddie Fields stroked a fly ball to centerfield that was mishandled, scoring Patterson on the play. After a Taylor groundout, Karli Holliday became the third Cavalier to reach base on a Pikeview error with a hit to left field. Fields scored on the error making it 3-0 West. Walker singled to shortstop followed by an RBI groundout by Brooke Nutter, scoring Holliday. Treadway looked to add to the Cavalier lead with a high fly ball to centerfield, but the Panthers made the play after an error-filled second inning.
Greenbrier West was cruising defensively with Alley notching her second strikeout to sit down the lead-off hitter. Taylor and Holliday both fielded ground balls cleanly for the second consecutive Cavalier three up, three down inning.
Leading 4-0, West looked to add to their lead in the bottom of the third. Brown singled to start the inning. After Alley hit a pop fly to the shortstop, Patterson singled to centerfield. The relay to third caught the courtesy runner, Hannah Sweet, for the second out. With two outs, the Cavaliers rallied with three straight RBI singles. Fields, Taylor, and Holliday delivered the hits while Patterson, Fields, and Taylor plated the runs. Walker grounded out to end the inning, but the damage had been done. Greenbrier West led 7-0 after three.
After the Cavaliers produced another one, two, three inning in the top of the fourth, the West offense padded the lead. Brooke Nutter led off with a double followed by an RBI-triple by Treadway. Sweet laid down a sacrifice bunt that scored Treadway for a 9-0 lead.
Needing only three outs for a mercy-rule win, Alley dug in and did it in style. Alley delivered an immaculate inning, striking out Honaker, Hall, and White on only nine pitches.
This accomplishment is so rare in professional baseball that it has only been achieved 105 times in over 220,000 games since the inception of Major League Baseball in 1876.
With the win, the Cavaliers improved to 4-3 on the season. Greenbrier West heads to Richwood on Wednesday night and James Monroe Friday night.
