The James Monroe Mavericks are the new Class A State Champions.
Ending the season undefeated, the Mavericks took home the title after crushing Greater Beckley in a 72-47 win.
The team took an early lead and held on to it throughout the game. By the end of the first quarter, players pushed that lead to double digits.
A few players stood out as the team’s top scorers. One player, Shad Sauvage, scored an outstanding 23 points in 31 minutes. Another Maverick, Eli Allen, scored an additional 20 points. Also, Allen set a Class A state tournament record with an impressive 12 assists.
Collin Fox had 14 points and eight rebounds. Sauvage, Allen and Fox were all named to the Class A all-tournament team.
The community rallied to show the team support both during and after the game. Following the monumental achievement, the team was honored with a celebration parade. The procession traveled through Monroe County, eventually ending back at James Monroe High School.
Overall, the Mavericks ended a brilliant season with an auspicious win.
