The National Park Service is planning a prescribed burn at Grandview on Saturday, April 2, 2022. The Carper Field prescribed burn is in a grass unit of approximately 14 acres. The burn is tentatively scheduled for early afternoon on Saturday and is expected to last for several hours. Actual time of ignition may change depending on the weather conditions.
The purpose of the Carper Field burn is to prevent the transition of the field into a closed canopy forest, which will displace some declining grassland bird species. The park’s preferred management tool is to use prescribed fire to maintain this “old field” while still promoting the establishment of tall grass species favored by grassland nesting birds.
The burn will take place near the entrance to Grandview. At this time ignition is planned for between 1:00 and 2:00 pm, but the exact time is weather dependent and may change. If any press would like to attend this event, please call Dave Bieri, Public Information Officer, at 304-640-8848 for information on where to go when they arrive and updates on ignition time. Viewing of the burn will be limited due to access at the location that is being burned.
