For the second time this season, the Greenbrier East Lady Spartans defeated the James Monroe Mavericks, this time at Lindside, 69-42 in a game where East pulled away midway through the second half.
The win snaps a short two-game losing streak and sets up an early season showdown this Saturday against George Washington, a team that has become a sort of rival for the Spartans over the last few years.
In this contest, the Spartans controlled the whole game and put it away late.
Cadence Stewart hit a left-wing three, then Daisha Summers scored underneath. Layla Pence got in on the fun and scored a couple baskets as well.
That stretch was part of a 12-0 run to start the game before the Mavs finally scored five in a row to break it. After the first quarter, the Spartans led 14-6.
Brooke Davis drained a 3-pointer early in the second quarter and her teammate Allie Dunford answered a Mary Meadows three with one of her own as the Spartans took a 23-12 lead with 3:57 left in the first half.
The Spartans built their advantage to 28-18 at halftime.
Two Haley Hunnicutt trifecta’s brought the Mavericks to within six points at 30-24 early in the third period, but Stewart, Summers and Davis hit consecutive threes to extend the lead back to 39-24. A scare occurred a few minutes later when Davis appeared to roll her ankle and left the game, but luckily she returned to the floor a couple minutes later.
Caroline Dotson hit a 3-pointer, Marley Patterson got one and East cruised to their seventh victory of the year.
Davis led East with 17 points. Summers and Stewart each had 15. Dunford scored eight and Pence had six as both of them also played really well.
