The Greenbrier East Lady Spartans controlled the opening tip and then controlled the game from that point, en route to a dominating 84-45 win over the Oak Hill Red Devils on Tuesday, December 7.
The game started about 45 minutes later than scheduled as Oak Hill’s team bus had some problems on the road and delayed their arrival to Spartan Gym.
But East (3-0) did not care when the game began, as they were on cruise control all night long.
Cadence Stewart got the scoring started when she hit a floater in the lane. Allie Dunford then scored three straight points, Stewart hit a long two and Brooke Davis drained a 3-pointer, and the Spartans had a 10-2 lead before some fans got back from the concession stand.
Speaking of Davis, the senior played maybe her best game ever for the green and gold.
She would knock down four threes in the quarter, grab several rebounds and allowed her teammate Daisha Summers to also score eight quick points as East built a commanding 31-5 lead after one quarter of play.
Layla Pence scored to start the second period and Summers followed with another bucket in the paint. At that point, it was 35-5, Spartans.
A few plays later, Davis got inside for a runner in the lane and Stewart followed that score with a short jumper, and the Spartans led 41-7 midway through the second.
The halftime lead was 47-16 after Summers made a nice move for a scoop and score just before the buzzer sounded.
Summers, Davis and Stewart continued their stellar play in the second half. Throw in point guard Dunford, and the second half also belonged to East.
Caroline Dotson hit a 3-pointer in the fourth, Aubrey Glover did the same and Elizabeth Wooding also scored as head coach Jim Justice dug deep into his bench late.
East shot 49 percent from the field and went 9-of-20 from downtown. They forced 23 Oak Hill turnovers and converted those into 24 points.
The Red Devils (2-1) shot just 32 percent.
Summers led the Spartans with a game-high 23 points. Davis got 22 points and 10 rebounds and was 6-of-9 from three-point land. She was named the Magic’s Computer Repair player of the game.
Stewart added 16 points and nine rebounds and Dunford collected eight points, four rebounds, six assists and two steals.
Semaya Lynch led the Red Devils with 17 points.
