The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reports, as of Friday, October 8, that 3,935 residents of the state have died due to complications of COVID-19. This number includes the 83 deaths reported thus far within Greenbrier County. In the 24-hour period, beginning at 10 a.m. on Thursday, October 7, an additional 1,071 cases of the virus were confirmed statewide. West Virginia has now seen a total of 253,138 confirmed cases amongst its residents, meaning that more than 15% of the state’s population has contracted COVID-19 at some point since the onset of the pandemic. At the time of this report, 11,223 cases are currently active, 3,825 of which have been confirmed as the far more contagious Delta variant of the virus.
There are 185 active cases currently being reported within Greenbrier County, including 94 cases of the Delta variant. As of Friday, Greenbrier County has an infection rate of 44.92%. The county’s percent positive is 6.01%. Currently, 53.6% of Greenbrier County’s population has received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, slightly below the state’s number of 55%.
Active outbreaks have been reported at two of Greenbrier County’s long-term care facilities; the Greenbrier Health Care Center, and Stonerise Lewisburg (Lewisburg Center). As of Saturday, October 9, Greenbrier County has a daily positivity-rate of 6.88%.
At present, 840 West Virginians are hospitalized due to COVID-19, 250 of whom are receiving care in the state’s intensive care units. Of those currently hospitalized, 168 are being kept alive through the use of ventilators.
