CHARMCO- On Monday, October 19th, Greenbrier West High School senior Jesse Walkup signed his LOI to continue his academic and athletic career as a WVU Tech Golden Bear.

He is the first in the class of 2027 to sign for the Tech Cross country and track teams. I asked Jesse a couple questions to gain some insight on how he is navigating the process.

Q: What went into your decision on choosing WVU Tech?

A: “I was invited down to practice with the team and it was great. The environment was great, team morale seemed high and they work hard. It really just felt like that’s the place I wanted to be in the future.”

Q: As a freshman, what do you hope to accomplish at WVU Tech?

A: “I want to come in and just help the team compete, finish the best that I can and help gain points. Just to push myself and the team to be better. The faster we get only helps us in the conference.”

The adept mid and long-distance runner has some impressive times under his belt. As the new Greenbrier West High School record holder for cross country with a time of 17:44, he is the back-to-back Region III, Class A champion, Wrapping up his senior regular season on top.

On the track, the veteran has a 2:07 800m time, 4:58 1600m and 10:40 in the 3200m. He is also and anchor and catalyst for the 4×800 relay team.

It’s a strong start to a senior campaign for the multi-sport athlete as he now prepares for the WVSSAC State Cross Country Meet at Cabel Midland on Saturday October 31.

He is hopeful that his distance prowess can earn him All-State honors. Good luck and congratulations Jesse, future WVU Tech Golden Bear!
