HUNTERSVILLE, W.Va. (WVDN) – In the heart of Pocahontas County, the small community of Huntersville is preparing to celebrate its heritage during the annual Huntersville Traditions Days, held the first weekend of October.
The event brings together local history, crafts, music, food, and living history experiences that showcase the area’s mountain culture.
The weekend begins Friday Oct. 2, at the historic Huntersville Schoolhouse. Starting at 4 p.m., visitors are invited to enjoy a free old-fashioned meal, followed by a traditional pie auction and cakewalk. The evening will include a live performance by The Bing Brothers with Jake Krack.
Festivities continue throughout the town on Saturday, Oct. 3 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The day will feature live music, clogging performances, a quilt show, and traditional craftsmen, including a banjo maker. Exhibits highlighting historic sporting and angling traditions will be on display.
Throughout Saturday, visitors can tour historic sites, such as the Mary Jo Fisher Huntersville Museum, the original town jail, the reconstructed Clerk’s Office, the schoolhouse, and re-enactors’ camps. Shuttle wagons and horse-drawn wagons will be available to ride. Saturday will bring several new additions this year, such as pointing dog field demonstrations at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., antique traps and primitive trapping demonstrations at noon and 2 p.m., historical interpreters, long-rifle arts, and a new farmers market.
Food is another highlight of the weekend. Saturday will host the annual Joyce Varner Memorial Salt Risin’ Bread Contest and the Hazel Sherbs Memorial Cornbread Contest. Visitors can also enjoy staples like pork tenderloin sandwiches, bean pot meals, and other event favorites.
Whether visitors come for the food, music, history, or demonstrations, Huntersville Traditions Days offers a chance to experience the traditions and community spirit that have been a part of life in Pocahontas County for generations.
