Greenbrier College
Greenbrier College for Women is scheduled to open its 115thyear on September 14. The opening address wlll by made by Governor William A. MacCorkle. Following the formal opening exercises will be the registration and classification of students. Room reservations already made indicate an attendance that may tax the limit of the institution.
In 1778
In the search for farms of this community which have been the longest in possession of one family, the place now owned by W. Lacey Hogshead, of Ronceverte, which is located in Second Creek district, Monroe County, is discovered to be unusual. There is a record in the Greenbrier County clerk’s office that this farm then owned by John Hogshead, was surveyed by Thomas Edgar December 12, 1780, and that it was settled prior to 1778.
58 Patients
Fifty-eight patients are in the state-colored tuberculosis sanitarium, according to Dr. C. A. Crichlow, the superintendent. Within ten days the new water works at the institution will be completed and ready for use. It is calculated that the sewer system and septic tanks will be completed also within the next two or three weeks.

The 139th session of Greenbrier College opened on September 12. Dr. French W. Thompson, president of Greenbrier College, announced a capacity enrollment for this year.
The Hogs Got A Kick Out Of This One
Summers Pinnell of Alvon was driving some hogs on his farm one day last week. When one of the hogs got out of hand, Mr. Pinnell gave him a sharp kick –result—the hog got back inline –Mr. Pinnell broke a toe on his kicking foot.
New Catholic Church
The Most Reverend John J. Swint, D. D., Bishop of Wheeling, dedicated the new Sacred Heart Catholic Church at East Rainelle. At present the average attendance at Sunday mass is in excess of 120. This is the only Catholic church on Route 60 between White Sulphur Springs and Boomer.

All Wrong’
Anthropologist Margaret Mead says the assumption that all people will be alike if treated alike is a “sham, a hypocrisy of the worst sort that has been destroying an awful lot of people.”
“What I want to emphasize very heavily is the only way you give people equal opportunity is to recognize their differences, one from another,” she told an Justice Department Equal Opportunity project.
Call For Ban Of
Aerosol Sprays
An immediate ban on aerosol sprays containing fluorocarbons is being demanded by the Natural Resources Defense Council, an environmental group. The group noted that the National Academy of Sciences study committee had linked the gases to erosion of the earth’s ozone shield.
‘They’re Doing
Something About It’
Not everyone if complaining about the high cost of energy these days. Some people are doing something about it. Harvey and Naomi Cohen of Gap Mills, for example, are in the process of building their own solar-heated home in Monroe County. The 1,300 square foot structure is nearing completion on a knoll facing south overlooking Sweet Springs Valley. The Cohens are seated in front of of the inner facing of the solar wall.

Officials Try To
Halt Gas Price
Gouging In WV
Governor Bob Wise has announced he will work with Attorney General Darrell V. McGraw to prevent gas gouging in West Virginia. McGraw’s Consumer Protection Division has received numerous telephone reports from citizens about gasoline price gouging throughout the state. Secretary of State Joe Manchin also reported his office was “flooded with call from citizens across the state” reporting gas increases.
