The annual Graham House Chili Dinner is set to take place on Saturday, Sept. 18 beginning at noon and lasting until 4 p.m. Vendors will be set up on the premises. There will also be music, apple butter and apple cider.
According to the Graham House Preservation Society, the Graham House was built between 1770 and 1772 by Colonel James Graham. The log cabin is one of the oldest homes in West Virginia and has been on the National Registry of Historic Places since 1976.
Legend states that Graham’s daughter Elizabeth was taken by natives following an attack on the home in which two lives were lost. After searching for eight long years, Graham located and rescued his daughter near what is now Maysville Kentucky. The Legend also says that Graham reversed his horse’s shoes to cause confusion should the natives try to follow them.
The Graham House is a testament to the luxury afforded wealthier families during this period. Unlike most log cabins of the time, Colonel Graham built a three-story, impressive structure.
