FARGO, SD- Greenbrier East High School wrestlers Hunter Holcomb and Keegan Barron will represent West Virginia this July at the USA Wrestling Junior & 16U National Championships, better known throughout the wrestling community as “Fargo.”
Held annually inside the Fargodome in Fargo, North Dakota, the prestigious week-long event is recognized as the largest wrestling tournament in the world, attracting more than 8,500 entries from across the United States. Wrestlers compete in freestyle and Greco-Roman competition in both the Junior and 16U divisions, with approximately 30 mats operating simultaneously throughout the tournament.
Qualifying for Fargo is an accomplishment in itself. Wrestlers must earn the opportunity to represent their home state, with each state limited in the number of competitors it can send in each age group, weight class and wrestling style. Simply earning a spot in the national championships places athletes among the top wrestlers in their state.
Holcomb enters the tournament following an impressive freshman season at Greenbrier East. Despite being just a second-year wrestler, he continued to build on an already successful career. As an eighth grader in 2025, Holcomb was a West Virginia Youth Wrestling Association state placer. During his freshman campaign with the Spartans, he finished as the Coalfield Conference runner-up, placed third at the regional championship to qualify for the WVSSAC State Wrestling Tournament, earned Academic All-State honors and was recognized as a West Virginia Daily News Athlete of the Year nominee.
Barron, a 3-year wrestler and upcoming senior, will join Holcomb in representing both Greenbrier East and the Mountain State on one of wrestling’s biggest stages. Fargo is widely regarded as the premier proving ground for elite high school wrestlers, with college coaches from NCAA Division I, II and III programs using the event to evaluate many of the nation’s top prospects. Numerous Fargo champions have gone on to become NCAA champions, World champions and Olympic medalists.
As Holcomb and Barron prepare to compete against some of the nation’s best wrestlers, they will proudly represent Greenbrier East, their community and the state of West Virginia at one of the sport’s most prestigious events.
The event runs from July 10-18.
