FAIRLEA— Greenbrier East High School has announced the hiring of Brittany Cleghon and Deena Pack as the new leaders of the Spartan cheerleading program, bringing a combination of experience, community involvement, and enthusiasm to one of the school’s athletic squads.
For Cleghon, the decision to return to coaching was driven by both her passion for cheerleading and a desire to give back to the community. When the opportunity became available, she said it felt like the right time to step back into a coaching role.
“Coaching has always been something I am passionate about,” Cleghon said.
“There was a need within the program, and Deena and I felt that our unique skill sets, shared love for cheer, and commitment to our community would allow us to help move the program in a positive direction.”
Cleghon also noted that her daughter (Bailee) has two years remaining in the Spartan cheer program, making the opportunity especially meaningful on a personal level. She said both coaches are deeply connected to the community and hope to strengthen relationships throughout the school system and among Spartan supporters.
Taking over a cheerleading team comes with a significant commitment, particularly considering that cheer is often regarded as one of the longest athletic seasons in high school sports. Despite their busy schedules, both coaches say they are prepared for the challenge.
“The time commitment was definitely something we considered carefully,” Cleghon said. “Both Deena and I are heavily involved in our full-time careers, our families, and other community organizations.”
She added that years of supporting their own children through athletics have helped them understand the dedication necessary to build and maintain a successful program.
“Over the years, we’ve learned how to balance responsibilities and prioritize what matters most.”
As they prepare for the upcoming season, Cleghon said the coaching staff’s focus will be on creating a positive atmosphere that promotes accountability, discipline, and growth.
“Our focus will be on creating a positive, disciplined, and supportive environment where athletes are encouraged to work hard, hold themselves to a high standard, and take pride in representing their school and community. We believe the cheer program is an important part of the Spartan family,” she said.
Both new coaches hope to build upon the traditions already established within Spartan cheer while emphasizing teamwork, leadership, sportsmanship, and school spirit. Cleghon believes the program has tremendous potential moving forward and is excited about the future of Greenbrier East cheerleading.
With preparations already underway for the upcoming school year, Spartan supporters can expect a team dedicated to representing Greenbrier East with pride both on the sidelines and throughout the community.
