Hey there and welcome to this special fair food edition of Let Me Do You a Flavor! In this short column, I will talk to you about many people’s favorite part of the fair —the food!
This year my wife Candi and I decided to go to the fair a little later in the day in an attempt to beat the heat — instead, we were hit with some rain but that was ok.
One thing we love to do is eat our way through the fair and we started with a Philly cheesesteak sandwich located right beside Ben Ellen Donuts — don’t judge me I can’t remember the name. This is one of our favorite sandwiches because we love the crispy bread and the steak topped with different cheeses, onions and banana peppers along with a drizzle of A1.
A little later we had a cattleman’s steak sandwich cooked medium rare and it was good as always. What I love about these sandwiches is that it is more focused on just the steak than a bunch of toppings; as always it didn’t disappoint!
Next, we had heard a lot of chatter about a dill pickle pizza from Gillette’s Pizza located close to the horse barns and next to the glazed donuts. We got there just in time! They had been out of the pizza for four hours and there were only four slices left — so we each snagged a slice. I was pleasantly surprised. It was really good with lots of dill flavor, but my favorite part is there was no sauce. This pizza was one I would definitely have again!
We rounded out this fair trip with some glazed donuts that are the size of your head — talk about a sugar overload! These donuts are good for sure and I ended up with glaze all over my face. Ok, maybe that’s an exaggeration but that’s what it felt like. I am not a milk drinker so I washed mine down with water but Candi enjoyed hers with some chocolate milk. After eating these I felt like Candi needed to roll me to the car!
Normally we enjoy some gyros and Ben Ellen donuts but decided to save them for our second trip to the fair later on in the week. I hope you are all enjoying the fair and all it has to offer and especially the food! Be safe and eat well — and look for my normal column at the end of the week!
