LEWISBURG, W.Va. (WVDN) – Carnegie Hall invites participants ages 14 and older to join Introduction to American Sign Language, a six‑week beginner series led by Emma Foster, BA in ASL & Interpreting, MSW, LICSW, on Tuesdays, May 19, 26, June 2, 9, 16, and 23 from 6–7:30 p.m.

Designed in support of Carnegie Hall’s mission to expand inclusivity and accessibility in the arts, this progressive course introduces students to the ASL alphabet, foundational signs, and essential conversational phrases. Each week builds on the last, offering a structured and supportive learning environment that also includes an in‑depth exploration of Deaf and Hard of Hearing culture in America.

Emma Foster is an experienced ASL educator and licensed clinical social worker whose work bridges communication, culture, and community care. She holds a bachelor’s degree in American Sign Language & Interpreting and spent four years as a professional ASL Educational Interpreter, earning a Superior rating on the Sign Language Proficiency Exam. With additional graduate training as an MSW and LICSW, Foster brings a holistic, people‑centered approach to teaching, emphasizing both linguistic skill and cultural understanding. Her classes are known for being welcoming, accessible, and grounded in real‑world communication.

Open to a maximum of 15 students, the series provides an engaging entry point for anyone beginning their ASL journey. The cost is $95 per person.

Carnegie Hall encourages early registration for this meaningful and mission‑driven series, ideal for students, educators, arts lovers, and anyone seeking to build more inclusive communication skills.
