LEWISBURG, W.Va. (WVDN) – Carnegie Hall invites writers, artists, and creative thinkers to discover the powerful connection between visual art and language in Writer’s Workshop: From Visual Experience to Vivid Words, led by instructor Stella Neeley on Saturday, May 9 from 10–11:30 a.m. Open to ages 14 and older, this intimate workshop is limited to fifteen participants, offering a focused and inspiring environment for exploration.
This unique class introduces participants to ekphrastic writing, a long‑standing literary tradition in which poetry responds to visual art. Through guided prompts, close‑looking exercises, and group discussion, students will learn how to translate color, texture, emotion, and narrative into vivid, expressive language. Participants will explore paintings, photographs, sculpture, and imagery as catalysts for creative writing, discovering how visual experience can spark fresh poetic insight.
Designed for writers of all levels—from beginners seeking a new creative outlet to experienced poets looking to deepen their craft, the workshop strengthens observation skills, expands creative voice, and encourages new ways of seeing the world. Students should bring a notebook or journal and a pen or pencil. Those who wish may also bring a favorite image or artwork to inspire their writing.
The class fee is $25 per person.
Carnegie Hall encourages early registration for this enriching Appalachian Heritage offering, which celebrates the interplay of art forms and the vibrant creative traditions of the region.
